In February Andrej Meszaros played for Slovakia on home ice after a very long time and could make the team for the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

After ten years in the NHL, Meszaros returned to Europe where he joined the Kontinental Hockey League’s Sibir Novosibirsk. He captained the Slovak national team that played in the Slovakia Cup during the February international break.

How did you feel when you came back into the national team?
Very good. I am glad that the coach called me to the team. We played a good tournament in front of our great fans. When you win a tournament, everything feels sweet.

Slovak national team coach Zdeno Ciger said that you were so excited about nomination.
Yes. I really wanted to play for Slovakia. As long as I am healthy, I have never had a problem with our national team. Also, it was close to my home town.

You were the captain of the Slovak team. How did you feel wearing the C on your chest?
I was very proud of it. We had many players on the team who could be the captains instead. Last time I had been in the same position it was during the World juniors, and it has been a long time ago.

Since last November you have been playing in the KHL for Sibir Novosibirsk. How do you like it there?
It is ok. We made it to the play-offs. For such a young team that we had we played a very good season. And I got used to freezing at -30°C too.

How was it for you to live in Russia?
It is a different mentality there than in America, but my adaptation was ok. The practices are harder here. On the other side there are less body checks during the games. But the KHL is still a high-class league.

How did you spend your free time over there?
It is hard for my wife, but in the past we spent a long time in Buffalo where it wasn't perfect either. Novosibirsk is quite a nice city even though there was a lot of snow everywhere.

Do you want to come back to NHL?
Of course I would like to come back, but I am realist. We will see what happens in the next season. Free agency is opening on 1st July. We had to talk with my agent how we will proceed.

Would you come back to the NHL even if you would have to go to a try-out?
It depends on the circumstances of the team. The NHL is the best hockey league in the world, but as I said, I am realist.
